PONGO (PORTUGAL-ANGOLA)

Pongo es la diva del kuduro progresivo y mestizo. Diez años después de dar voz a Kalemba (Wegue Wegue), la ex vocalista de los Buraka Sound System volvió en 2018 con un trabajo en solitario. Encarna la renovación del kuduro, mezclando sus raíces africanas con el pop y la música electrónica. Su actuación en el siempre prestigioso y novedo Transmusicales de Rennes fue considerada como una de las mejores del festival la pasada edición. La diva del kuduro está de vuelta, y esta vez, todo apunta que para quedarse.

SALIF KEITA (MALÍ) PREMIO LA MAR DE MÚSICAS 2019

Salif Keita, la voz dorada de África, es el premio La Mar de Músicas 2019. El artista de Malí comunicaba hace unos meses que iba a retirarse al menos de los estudios de grabación, al mismo tiempo que lanzaba el que va a ser su último trabajo “Un Autre Blanc”, un canto a la diferencia de quien ha transformado la música del continente africano a través de sus discos. La Mar de Músicas, festival que lo ha acogido a lo largo de toda su carrera, le va a entregar este año su galardón por “haber superado todo tipo de prejuicios dentro y fuera de África en su defensa de la población con albinismo y de quienes cantan sin pertenecer al casta griot, y por la inspiración de su poderosa voz y haber sabido mezclar la profunda tradición de su región con los sonidos globales”. Keita recogerá el premio La Mar de Músicas 2019 el mismo día que ofrecerá un concierto en el festival de Cartagena.

El premio La Mar de Músicas que este año recibirá Salif Keita ya ha sido recogido en otras ediciones por Totó la Momposina, Oumou Sangaré, Susana Baca, Cheick Lô, Pablo Milanés, Omara Portuondo y Gino Paoli.

MARIZA (PORTUGAL)

 

Mariza podría haber sido la protagonista del genial libro de Dulce María Cardoso “El retorno”. Al igual que los protagonista del libro, publicado por la editorial La Umbría y la Solana, Mariza junto a su familia tuvo que abandonar Mozambique con la conquista de la independencia a la antigua colonia portuguesa. Y tuvieron que hacerlo sin mirar para atrás, dejando casa, amigos y con todo aquello que cupiese en una maleta.  “Llegamos a Lisboa sin nada y sin nadie que nos quisiera. Nos metimos en el barrio de la Morería en una casa donde entraba el agua cuando llovía. Nadie nos quería. No había dinero, no había trabajo. Mi mamá era negra; mi papá, rubio, y yo, así, con este colorcito” declaraba hace unos años en una entrevista para el País. Aquella niña se ha hecho mayor y ahora todos la quieren, todos la miran. Basta decir Mariza y se abren los teatros del mundo, de la Ópera de Sídney al Royal Albert Hall, y sus taquillas cuelgan el “todo vendido”. Maria dos Reis Nunes, Mariza, carga en estos momentos con la responsabilidad de ser la máxima representante de la cultura portuguesa en el mundo. La mayor fadista desde Amália Rodrigues; nadie se atrevería a discutírselo a estas alturas. Mucha gente ha querido conocer la música, la lengua, la cultura portuguesa, tras conocer su música. Ya no es aquella renovadora del fado que hace veinte años agitó la afición portuguesa con su novedoso acercamiento al género. Es la más internacional de las vocalistas de su país gracias a su entregada manera de estar sobre el escenario y a su curiosidad por adentrarse en otras parcelas vocales más internacionales. La embajadora de la UNESCO para la preservación del fado tradicional y Premio Luso-Español de Arte y Cultura 2018 viene a La Mar de Músicas, festival que la ha acogido a lo largo de sus años de carrera, para presentar su último disco, titulado, simplemente Mariza.

DEAD COMBO (PORTUGAL)

Como si fueran personajes salidos de una novela de Charles Bukowski, como si Fernando Pessoa se diera la mano con Tom Waits… Así se las gastan los portugueses Dead Combo, es decir, Pedro Gonçalves y Tó Trips. La Lisboa mestiza los vio nacer y crecer. Llevan en el alma la noche de la fusión y en su nuevo disco, «Odeon Hotel», dan rienda suelta a una amalgama sin prejuicios, pues caben en ella rastros de Morriocone, de Ry Cooder, de jazz, de blues y hasta de post-rock, siempre con las piezas instrumentales por bandera. Sin letras ni palabras, el dúo suena a la claridad del Tejo, a Lisboa, a Portugal  o al Mediterráneo; también a África o al desierto de Estados Unidos. Para poder plasmar estos paisajes es necesario encontrar un sonido: en este caso una guitarra y un contrabajo con cierto bagaje de rock’n’roll y de años dedicados a la música atravesando continentes, recogiendo el fado. Pedro Gonçalves y Tó Trips son dos personajes: un gangster y un sepulturero que salen de un cómic para hacer conciertos poderosos y muy impactantes visualmente. Su música es uno de los capítulos más hermosos y singulares nacidos en Portugal en la última década.

ANA MOURA (PORTUGAL)

Nacida en la portuguesa localidad de Santarem, Ana Moura es una de las grandes voces del fado; la diva del fado contemporáneo. La historia reciente del género no se puede escribir sin su nombre. Ella ha bebido de las fuentes de Amália Rodrigues, su gran referencia espiritual, pero si algo la caracteriza es cómo transforma instantáneamente cualquier melodía a la que presta su voz y la convierte en fado. Es una chispa inmediata, una explosión emocional, dirigida implacablemente al corazón del oyente. Con más de 300.000 discos vendidos, más de una decena de galardones entre los que destacan dos Globos de Oro, dos premios Amália, su historia, quizá, no se podría contar de la misma manera si no hubiesen aparecido en su vida los Rolling Stone, y aún menos si Prince no la hubiese escuchado en un local parisino. Los primeros la llamaron para que colaborase con ellos en un par de conciertos y el segundo se quedó tan ensimismado con su voz y con su personalidad que fue quien le dio el empujón para fusionar el jazz con el fado. Ha colaborado también con Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil o Herbie Hancock. Es la artista portuguesa con una de las carreras más pujantes de la actualidad.

MARIA DE MEDEIROS & LEGENDARY TIGERMAN (PORTUGAL)

La faceta más reconocida internacionalmente de María de Medeiros es la de actriz. Pero Medeiros estará en La Mar de Músicas para mostrar otras caras de su frenética actividad creativa: la de cantante y la de directora, en este caso de documentales. La Mar de Cine le hará un hueco especial en esta edición, al igual que lo hace la sección musical del festival que la acogerá junto al poeta y músico Paulo Furtado, el rockero de Coimbra que está detrás de la marca Legendary Tigerman. Considerada en la actualidad como la actriz portuguesa con mayor proyección internacional, Madeiros es afrancesada, políglota, risueña y nunca pierde su expresión de dulce niña traviesa. Habla seis lenguas y ha hecho casi de todo: actriz de cine (Henry y June, Pulp fiction, Huevos de oro y otras 60 películas más), pero también directora (Capitanes de Abril, y varios títulos más de ficción y documentales), teatro, musicales y, últimamente cantante, letrista y compositora. “Soy una actriz que canta y lo hago con un pie en el teatro y otro en la música, me gusta mucho mezclar las dos cosas” suele decir cuando le preguntan por la disciplina por la que se siente más atraída. Su música como ella es ecléctica, interpreta fados, salsa, bossanova, flamenco, jazz… La actriz portuguesa que se forjó trabajando con cineastas tan imprescindibles en la historia del cine como Manoel de Oliveira o Quentin Tarantino, o como Bigas Luna en el caso del cine español viene a Cartagena junto al singular músico portugués Legendary Tigerman.

ESTRELLA MORENTE (ESPAÑA)

Estrella Morente ha enarbolado desde los inicios de su carrera la libertad. Libertad personal y libertad artística, que ha llevado a la cantaora por territorios muy diferentes, alejados del flamenco: el tango, la música clásica, el jazz, la bossanova… estilos que ha coloreado siempre con su estilo y su voz. Ahora vuelve a viajar, y lo hace hacia el mundo de la copla. Así, «Copla», se titula precisamente su nuevo trabajo discográfico, el primero individual que publica en siete años. Un disco en el que empezó a trabajar mucho antes junto a su padre, el enorme Enrique Morente, y que ahora ella dedica a su abuela Rosario. Un álbum en el que afronta el reto de interpretar canciones tan icónicas como Yo soy esa, ¡Ay pena, penita! o Suspiros de España, del maestro Maestro Álvarez Alonso, que fue compuesta en nuestra ciudad, Cartagena. Estrella asegura haberse enamorado del género y de sus principales intérpretes, Lola Flores, Imperio Argentina, Concha Piquer o Juana Reina. En su reivindicación del género popular por excelencia en nuestro país estará acompañada por una banda de música, con los vientos y las percusiones como protagonistas, a la más pura tradición española. Y aunque en el disco, se aleja de esas raíces flamencas que tanto la definen, en su directo, la artista, la cantante de flamenco más importante de nuestro país, no dejará pasar por alto su apellido.

KIKI MORENTE (ESPAÑA )

El menor de los Morente, Kiki, será el encargado de abrir la jornada de clausura de La Mar de Músicas, que este año está dedicada a una saga, la suya, los Morente. Una noche especial en la que actuarán además sus hermanas mayores Soleá y Estrella, también productora de su disco, Albayzín. Pertenecientes a la aristocracia del flamenco, los hijos de Enrique Morente y la bailaora Aurora Carbonell “La Pelota” han actuado ya en La Mar de Músicas en solitario o acompañando a su padre, en las ocasiones que éste cantó en Cartagena. Vienen ahora cada uno a presentarnos su proyecto en solitario. Kiki Morente lo hará con Albayzín, con el que ha empezado una carrera con mucho trabajo y humildad, dos de las enseñanzas que le dejó su padre, que se ganó la vida como zapatero o como aprendiz de platero antes de ser figura del cante. El disco que lo trae a Cartagena recupera palos y sonoridades que tanto gustaban a su padre, como son bulerías, fandangos, soleás, sevillanas, polos y tarantos.  El maestro le dijo a su hijo “La casa se tiene que empezar por los cimientos, beber de los clásicos para aprender y encontrar tu propio camino”. La impronta académica de Morente padre se aprecia en el álbum, al igual que se apreciaba en Mi cante y un poema (2001), el meteorito con que su hermana mayor, Estrella Morente, irrumpió en el panorama discográfico. La saga continúa.

SOLEÁ MORENTE (ESPAÑA)

 

Con ese nombre y ese apellido, ya se le adivina como diferente. ¿Rockera? ¿Flamenca? Como artista Solea Morente ha nacido en la fusión, y musicalmente es tanto una cosa como la otra. Nacida en Madrid pero criada en Granada, Soleá comenzó colaborando con los miembros de su familia antes de emprender su carrera como solista. La cantante ayudó a su padre y su hermana con varios de sus trabajos hasta que en 2015 publicó su primer álbum Tendrá Que Haber Un Camino. En el disco se incluyeron dos composiciones póstumas de Enrique Morente. Ole lorelei, el nuevo disco de la cantante, ha sido producido por Alonso Díaz, del grupo Napoleón Solo, y ha dado como resultado una perfecta combinación entre pop  y flamenco, que ya presentó el año pasado en La Mar de Músicas. Viene a mostrar sus creaciones sin prejuicios.

KYEKYEKU & GHANALOGUE HIGHLIFE (GHANA)

El maestro de la guitarra Kyekyeku, como lo califica la propia CNN África Voices, es un músico ghanés que profesa pasión tanto por la acústica como la eléctrica, con un intrincado groove percusivo y exuberantes trompetas, a caballo entre el folk y los ritmos urbanos. Kyekyeku forma parte de una generación de músicos ghaneses que combinan las tradiciones musicales de las raíces del Palmwine (un estilo del folclore ghanés), Highlife y Afrobeat. Kyekyeku y Ghanalogue Highlife es una celebración de la herencia musical de la Ghana de una era pasada y también un saludo a la evolución de las tendencias modernas con letras que recuerdan a las canciones recreativas de las aldeas, las canciones de protesta, la poesía de amor y la antigua espiritualidad africana.

Cartagena, city of the La Mar de Músicas Festival XXV Edition.

La Mar de Músicas announces that Portugal will be the guest country of its 25th edition, which will be held from July 19 to 27, 2019.
