THE WATERBOYS VIERNES 28 JUNIO

Con cuarenta años de vida y varios álbumes que hoy se consideran discos clásicos dentro de la historia del rock, como “This is the sea” (1985), “Fisherman’s blues” (1988) o “Room to roam” (1990), The Waterboys, la banda liderada por el carismático músico escocés Mike Scott, es una referencia incontestable en el mundo del folk y en el del rock & roll, y ha sido uno de los grupos clave para la recuperación para el gusto popular de las esencias del folk irlandés. Comparados por muchos con el mejor Neil Young, tras su magnífico álbum doble de 2017 “Out of all this blue”, The Waterboys abren la XXII edición de Jazz San Javier con la presentación en España de su recientísimo álbum, con fecha de publicación 24 de mayo de 2019, “Where the action is”.

FERNANDO RUBIO & THE INNER DEMONS VIERNES 28 JUNIO

Hace ya unos cuantos años que Fernando Rubio participó junto a su banda Ferroblues, de grato recuerdo, en Jazz San Javier, y su progresión musical, a juzgar por el excelente álbum que constituye su último trabajo, “Cheap Chinese Guitar”, ha sido impresionante. Blues, country, rock, soul, músicas todas de raíz estadounidense, pero que este cartagenero hace suyas con gran autenticidad. Quienes, como él, hemos amado y amamos esas músicas, encontramos en las canciones de Fernando ecos de Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, de The Band, de The Jayhawks, en composiciones muy inspiradas, que nos hacen preguntarnos ¿hasta dónde podría haber llegado este músico de haber desarrollado su carrera en EEUU y con la ayuda de la antes potente industria discográfica americana? En cualquier caso, “Cheap Chinese Guitar” y la excelente banda que le acompaña son una buena razón para invitarlo de nuevo al festival y disfrutar del altísimo nivel de estos músicos de la Región de Murcia.

BVR FLAMENCO BIG BAND SABADO 6 JULIO

El fuego y el duende del flamenco se enriquecen con colores inéditos con los maravillosos arreglos orquestales para Big Band de Bernard Van Rossum, saxofonista, compositor y arreglista hispano-holandés, líder y director de la espectacular BVR Big Band. Sus dos álbumes, aclamados por la crítica, “Jaleo Holandés” (2015) y “Luz de Luna” (2017) llevan la fusión entre el jazz y el flamenco a alturas siderales, y sirven de base a un directo espectacular, algo de lo que nadie podrá extrañarse teniendo en cuenta la trayectoria de David de Jacoba, un cantaor excepcional, miembro de la última banda del gran Paco de Lucía, y del propio Bernard Van Rossum, un magnífico saxofonista de jazz y director de orquesta. Disfrutemos pues de esta fantástica Big Band, compuesta por grandes instrumentistas de jazz y de sus ilustres invitados, a los que se suman a la guitarra flamenca Ricardo Moreno y la gran bailaora mejicana Karen Lugo; pocas veces puede verse reunido tanto talento en un solo escenario.

ANNA LUNA SABADO 29 JUNIO

Una de las cantantes de jazz y de música brasileña más prestigiosas de España, además de guitarrista y compositora, Anna Luna, nacida en Barcelona, se formó en el Conservatorio de Sabadell en Piano y Lenguaje musical, ampliando después sus estudios de Armonía, Voz, Guitarra, Cajón y Danza flamenca. Ha sido vocalista de la Orquesta Janio Martí, la Orquesta Maravella y la Cotton Club Big Band, y ha tocado con músicos de la talla de Miguel “Angá” Díaz, Jordi Bonell, Pedro Javier González, Víctor de Diego o David Palau. De entre sus discos destacan los álbumes: “Alguien” (1997), “Jazidas Project” (2002), “Batida Diferente” (2003), “Spring Is Here” (2005), “Sketches” (2007), “Femenina” (2011) o el más reciente “Urubú” (2016). Con una gran actividad docente que compagina con giras nacionales e internacionales, Anna Luna viene por primera vez a Jazz San Javier, acompañada por cinco grandes músicos, para mostrarnos por qué se la considera una de las mejores vocalistas españolas, deslumbrante cuando aborda el repertorio de la Música Popular Brasileña.

ZENET VIERNES 5 JULIO

En la XIX edición del festival, en una fantástica noche que compartió con el supergrupo de fusión Spyro Gyra, disfrutamos la música y el arte de Toni Zenet en San Javier por primera vez. Este gran cantante español dejó patente que es uno de los imprescindibles en la música de nuestro país, además de un buen actor y showman. Acaba de editar un nuevo álbum, “La Guapería”, esencialmente dedicado al bolero cubano, un disco magnífico, y una buena razón para volver a invitarlo a Jazz San Javier junto a esa excepcional banda que le acompaña que, por sí misma, ya es un aliciente para cualquier aficionado al jazz. Nada menos que Manuel Machado y Öve Larsson a la trompeta y al trombón, respectivamente, Pepe Rivero al piano, Raúl Márquez al violín y la guitarra mágica de José Taboada. Excelentes composiciones del acervo musical hispánico para este gran vocalista que lidera el nuevo jazz en español, en su regreso, muy esperado, a Jazz San Javier.

ANTONIO LIZANA SEXTETO VIERNES 12 JULIO
INVITA A LA MARI DE CHAMBAO

Decíamos hace unos años, tras su fantástico primer concierto en Jazz San Javier, que Antonio Lizana lo tenía todo para triunfar y que, si nada se interponía en su trayectoria, en muy pocos años sería uno de los grandes del jazz español. Nos quedamos cortos porque este saxofonista, cantaor y compositor gaditano está triunfando y paseando su arte por todo el planeta, convirtiéndose en un tiempo récord en una de las más admiradas estrellas del jazz flamenco, la forma más genuina del jazz en nuestro país. Su último álbum “Oriente”, el tercero de su carrera, y sus colaboraciones como cantaor y saxofonista con la Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra de Arturo O’Farrill, en Nueva York, son sus dos últimos hitos, y Antonio Lizana desplegará su arte en San Javier al frente de un sexteto de brillantes músicos con una invitada especial de excepción: María del Mar Rodríguez, “La Mari”, cantante del grupo Chambao, una de las artistas más queridas y admiradas de nuestro país.

KENNEDY ADMINISTRATION VIERNES 12 JULIO

Compuesta por la gran cantante Kennedy, Ondre J Pivec a los teclados, Jay White al bajo y el espectacular baterista Nathaniel Townsley, de grato recuerdo en Jazz San Javier, el grupo Kennedy Administration es un auténtico huracán de alegría, ritmo y energía. Mezclando el soul con pinceladas de jazz, r&b, hip-hop y funk, el cuarteto es una máquina bien engrasada que transmite su pasión por la música a todas las audiencias. Mención aparte merece la extraordinaria cantante Kennedy, una de las mejores vocalistas del nuevo soul-jazz, con claras influencias de Sade, Anita Baker y del estilo vocal de Luther Vandross. Un gran estreno en Jazz San Javier, de uno de los grupos más reconocidos del soul jazz en Nueva York.

BILL EVANS & THE SPY KILLERS DOMINGO 14 JULIO

MARCUS MILLER VIERNES 19 JULIO

Considerado uno de los músicos más influyentes del planeta y uno de los mejores bajistas de todos los tiempos, Marcus Miller, ganador de dos premios Grammy, ha dejado oír el característico sonido de su bajo eléctrico en innumerables éxitos, como “Just the two of us” de Bill Withers o “Never too much” de Luther Vandross, dejando su inconfundible marca en las carreras de artistas tan admirados como Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, Bob James, Lalah Hathaway o Wayne Shorter. Importantes en su carrera son también los años que pasó en la banda de Miles Davis, con quien grabó seis álbumes, entre ellos el aclamado “Tutu”. Vuelve el gran Marcus Miller a Jazz San Javier, tras su paso por la octava y la décima edición del mismo, presentando su magnífico nuevo álbum “Laid Black”, nominado a un premio Grammy como mejor álbum contemporáneo instrumental; otro gran éxito de esta superestrella de la fusión entre el jazz, el funk y el soul.

RON CARTER FOURSIGHT QUARTET DOMINGO 21 JULIO

 

Leyenda viva del jazz, símbolo de la mejor tradición clásica dentro del mismo y uno de los mejores contrabajistas, si no el mejor, de toda la historia de este estilo musical, Ron Carter es también el contrabajista que más grabaciones atesora en toda la historia del jazz (más de 2.500 o 3.000, según las fuentes). Elegante y discreto, de porte casi espiritual, este fantástico músico tiene una clase innata que casa a la perfección con su instrumento. Con casi siete décadas de carrera, ha tocado con la mayor parte de los grandes del jazz, por mencionar sólo unos pocos: Eric Dolphy, Don Ellis, Thelonious Monk, Cannonball Adderley o Sonny Rollins, y formó parte del célebre quinteto de Miles Davis, junto a Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter y Tony Williams. Desde 2009, en la XII edición de Jazz San Javier, no habíamos tenido la suerte de volver a disfrutar de la presencia de este gigante del jazz, bienvenido pues Ron Carter y su prestigioso.

ZOOT SUITERS MIERCOLES 24 JULIO

La espectacular banda de swing murciana Zoot Suiters, compuesta por siete grandes músicos, es una auténtica fábrica de energía y optimismo, integrando en su repertorio los grandes clásicos del swing y el lindy hop de los años 30 y 40 del siglo XX, así como estupendas versiones del pop actual adaptadas al swing. Hace dos años organizaron una impresionante fiesta de alegría, baile y buena música en la Explanada Barnuevo de La Ribera; este verano, en el precioso marco del Puerto Tomás Maestre en La Manga, esperamos un éxito del mismo nivel, con este fantástico grupo, que arrastra junto a él a una legión de amantes del swing.

CORY HENRY & THE FUNK APOSTLES SABADO 13 JULIO

Organista, pianista y cantante, Cory Henry es natural de Brooklyn, Nueva York, donde empezó a tocar el Hammond B3 y el piano a los dos años de edad, y con sólo seis años ofreció un concierto en el Teatro Apolo. Empezó a girar en 2006 con grandes figuras como Bruce Springsteen, Michael McDonald, Kenny Garrett o The Roots y grabó dos álbumes a su nombre, muy bien valorados por la crítica y por los aficionados al Jazz y el Gospel, sus dos grandes influencias. Tras sus trabajos como miembro del supergrupo Snarky Puppy, en abril de 2018 grabó su primer sencillo con su nueva banda The Funk Apostles, y unos meses más tarde el álbum “Art of Love”, que muestra, en gran parte, el impresionante poder que la banda tiene en directo. Hacía años que no surgía un grupo tan completo como éste, con unas voces fantásticas, unos instrumentistas con solos hipnóticos, algo así como unos Sly & The Family Stone del siglo XXI. Un gran concierto de soul, funk & gospel para deleite de los aficionados de Jazz San Javier, que sabrán apreciarlo en lo que vale.

MYLES SANKO 17 JULIO
INVITADA ESPECIAL: VANESSA HAYNES

Myles Sanko es un grande del soul europeo y su trayectoria ascendente es vertiginosa; cada año suma más adeptos, siendo Francia, España y el Reino Unido los países donde es más admirado. Tal como ocurrió antes del lanzamiento de su álbum “Just Being Me” en 2016, cuyos temas principales fueron presentados en primicia en nuestro festival, Myles Sanko presentará, también esta vez, en primicia en Jazz San Javier, con su banda al completo, una parte de los temas de su nuevo álbum, que verá la luz a finales de 2019. Para la segunda parte del concierto, una exclusiva, diseñada especialmente para el festival a petición del mismo, con la participación, como invitada especial, de una de las mejores voces femeninas del soul europeo, Vanessa Haynes, voz principal de la consagrada y mítica banda británica de soul Incognito. Vanessa y Myles interpretarán varios duetos originales juntos, por primera vez en un escenario, y algunas versiones de los clásicos del soul.

DIXIELAND TRAIN JUEVES 18 JULIO

La espectacular banda Dixieland Train es una Jazz Marching Band de Murcia que se especializa en clásicos del Jazz Dixieland y de la música moderna con arreglos de jazz tradicional.

Este verano, con ocasión del Festival, la banda recorrerá las calles del centro de la ciudad de San Javier y la Explanada Barnuevo de Santiago de la Ribera con su alegre y distendido pasacalles de variado repertorio al estilo de Nueva Orleans.

STEVE GADD BAND SABADO 20 JULIO

Leyenda viva de la batería, Steve Gadd es uno de los bateristas más admirados del mundo. De él ha dicho Chick Corea: “todos los bateristas quieren tocar como Gadd porque él alcanza la perfección”. Además de líder de su propia banda, es uno de los bateristas de sesión más demandados en el planeta y ha inmortalizado su arte en discos de Simon y Garfunkel, Steely Dan, James Taylor, Joe Cocker, Grover Washington Jr., Chick Corea, Lee Ritenour, Frank Sinatra, Al Jarreau, Eric Clapton, Chet Baker, Michel Petrucciani, The Bee Gees, Michael McDonald y muchos otros. Todo un honor recibir en Jazz San Javier a uno de los mejores bateristas de la historia del Jazz, que además acaba de ganar el premio Grammy 2019 por el Mejor Album Instrumental Contemporáneo, por su reciente álbum “Steve Gadd Band”.

VÍCTOR ANEIROS BAND + MIKE WHEELER, ALEX ZAYAS Y ANTONIO SERRANO MARTES 23 JULIO

Uno de los conciertos estrella de esta edición, el regreso del gran guitarrista y cantante gallego Víctor Aneiros y su banda, más tres invitados de excepción. Víctor Aneiros es uno de los mejores guitarristas de blues de España, pionero del blues en gallego, acaba de editar un álbum íntegramente en castellano, “Un extraño entre la multitud”, que presentará en Jazz San Javier. Para la segunda parte del concierto, Mike Wheeler, estrella del moderno blues de Chicago, nos ofrecerá una buena dosis de blues eléctrico de Chicago acompañado del gran guitarrista y cantante catalán afincado en Canadá Alex Zayas y el genio de la armónica Antonio Serrano, junto a Víctor Aneiros y su banda. Una producción de Jazz San Javier que dejará huella en los aficionados al blues del festival.

BILL EVANS & THE SPY KILLERS DOMINGO 14 JULIO

Since his first visit to our festival in its V edition in 2002, Bill Evans has provided us with unforgettable nights, such as the first visit of the Randy Brecker – Bill Evans Soulbop Band in 2004, the historic concert with the CTI All Stars Band in 2009, Robben Ford & Bill Evans in 2010 or Bill Evans Soulgrass Band in 2013, to the point that we can consider it as one of the indisputable icons of Jazz San Javier, an inexhaustible and brilliant musician who continually reinvents himself and who always has something new to offer. However, this exceptional saxophonist and composer still kept a surprise for us: he is beginning to sing at his concerts, and he does it quite well. We want to hear it with their new band The Spy Killers, with the spectacular German drummer Wolfgang Haffner, the virtuoso of the Hammond B3 Simon Oslender and the groove master of electric bass Gary Grainger; Jazz Fusion at the highest level with a great band led by one of the most admired saxophonists on the planet.

he spectacular swing band Murcia Zoot Suiters, composed of seven great musicians, is an authentic factory of energy and optimism, integrating in its repertoire the great classics of swing and lindy hop of the 30s and 40s of the 20th century, as well as great current pop versions adapted to the swing. Organist, pianist and singer, Cory Henry is a native of Brooklyn, New York, where he started playing the Hammond B3 and the piano at two years of age, and at the age of six offered a concert at the Apolo Theater. He began touring in 2006 with great figures such as Bruce Springsteen, Michael McDonald, Kenny Garrett and The Roots and recorded two albums in his name, highly valued by critics and fans of Jazz and Gospel, his two great influences. After his work as a member of the supergroup Snarky Puppy, in April 2018 he recorded his first single with his new band The Funk Apostles, and a few months later the album «Art of Love», which shows, in large part, the impressive power that the band has live. A group as complete as this one had not appeared for years, with fantastic voices, instrumentalists with hypnotic solos, something like Sly & The Family Stone of the 21st century. A great concert of soul, funk & gospel to delight the fans of Jazz San Javier, who will appreciate it for what it’s worth.

SPECIAL GUEST: VANESSA HAYNES

Myles Sanko is a big one of the European soul and his upward trajectory is vertiginous; every year adds more followers, being France, Spain and the United Kingdom the countries where it is most admired. As it happened before the release of his album «Just Being Me» in 2016, whose main themes were presented at the festival, Myles Sanko will present, also this time, a premiere at Jazz San Javier, with his band in full, a part of the themes of his new album, which will be released at the end of 2019. For the second part of the concert, an exclusive, specially designed for the festival at his request, with the participation, as a special guest, of one of the best female voices of European soul, Vanessa Haynes, main voice of the consecrated and legendary British soul band Incognito. Vanessa and Myles will perform several original duets together, for the first time on stage, and some versions of the soul classics.

DIXIELAND TRAIN THURSDAY 18 JULY

The spectacular band Dixieland Train is a Jazz Marching Band from Murcia that specializes in Dixieland Jazz classics and modern music with traditional jazz arrangements.

This summer, on the occasion of the Festival, the band will tour the streets of the city center of San Javier and the Barnuevo Esplanade of Santiago de la Ribera with its cheerful and relaxed parade of varied repertoire in the style of New Orleans.

STEVE GADD BAND SATURDAY 20 JULY

Living legend of the drums, Steve Gadd is one of the most admired drummers in the world. Chick Corea said of him: «all the drummers want to play like Gadd because he reaches perfection». In addition to leading his own band, he is one of the most demanded session drummers on the planet and has immortalized his art on albums by Simon and Garfunkel, Steely Dan, James Taylor, Joe Cocker, Grover Washington Jr., Chick Corea, Lee Ritenour, Frank Sinatra, Al Jarreau, Eric Clapton, Chet Baker, Michel Petrucciani, The Bee Gees, Michael McDonald and many others. It is an honor to receive in Jazz San Javier one of the best drummers in the history of Jazz, who has also just won the 2019 Grammy for the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, for his recent album «Steve Gadd Band».

VÍCTOR ANEIROS BAND + MIKE WHEELER, ALEX ZAYAS AND ANTONIO SERRANO TUESDAY 23 JULY

One of the star concerts of this edition, the return of the great guitarist and Galician singer Víctor Aneiros and his band, plus three exceptional guests. Víctor Aneiros is one of the best blues guitarists in Spain, pioneer of blues in Galician, he has just released an album entirely in Spanish, «Un extraño entre la multitud», which he will present at Jazz San Javier. For the second part of the concert, Mike Wheeler, star of the modern blues of Chicago, will offer us a good dose of Chicago electric blues accompanied by the great Catalan guitarist and singer settled in Canada Alex Zayas and the genius of the harmonica Antonio Serrano, together with Víctor Aneiros and his band. A production of Jazz San Javier that will leave a mark on the blues fans of the festival.
